The Japanese jumbo quail is a fascinating and highly productive bird perfectly suited for small-scale agricultural production. At Langhard Lantbruk we breed this quail both for egg production and to show visitors how small-scale, sustainable farming can work.
The Japanese jumbo quail is a larger variant of the Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). It has been selectively bred to be somewhat heavier than the standard variety, making it more suitable for both egg and meat production. An adult bird often weighs between 250 and 350 grams, which is considerably more than many other quail species. Despite its size, it is a very calm and hardy bird that does well in flocks.
One of the most valued traits of the Japanese jumbo quail is its impressive egg production. A hen can lay up to 250–300 eggs per year under good conditions. The eggs are small, beautifully speckled and have a rich flavour appreciated by both chefs and food enthusiasts. Quail eggs are often used in salads, as a luxurious topping on various dishes or pickled as a delicacy.
Quails are also very efficient in their feed conversion. They grow quickly and often begin laying eggs at just 6–8 weeks of age. This makes them one of the most productive poultry species in the world relative to their size. At the same time, they require relatively little space compared to larger poultry, making them well suited for small-scale farms.
At Langhard Lantbruk we keep our quails in safe and clean environments where they can live in flocks with access to good feed and care. Our breeding is done on a small scale with a focus on animal welfare. This allows us to offer both fresh quail eggs and occasionally other products from the farm to our visitors.
Many visitors to the farm are surprised by how small yet lively the quails are. Despite their size, they are curious birds with a lot of personality. They are also an excellent example of how small animals can play an important role in local food production.
When you visit Langhard Lantbruk you can often see our quails up close and learn more about how they live, how the eggs are produced and how small-scale animal husbandry can contribute to a more local and sustainable food system.
